Have some extra time at home and want to do something useful with it? Want to use this time to take an online course? And perhaps take a course to learn a new hobby, a new skill, or even get a digital certificate and improve your job prospects?! Then you’re in the right place!

13 Best Websites to Take Online Courses & Classes

Whether for your job or personal self-development, learning new things, growing our knowledge, and developing our skills should always be a priority.

And this is true for me as well! As a digital nomad, it’s important for me to refine and keep my skills and knowledge updated.

And given that the way we socialize and travel are fluctuating constantly in the last few months and we may need to spend more time at home than usual, I think that now is a great opportunity to take some online courses that can help you personally and professionally.

So, for today’s article, I’ve created a megalist with the 13 best portals to take online courses, both paid and free

Want to know what they are and learn a bit more about what each one specializes in? Then read on!

But before we get into the details about each of the sites above, let’s cover one question first.

Why take an online course? Are online courses worth taking?

For starters, online courses can be very educational and professional. After all, it’s not just a series of videos with people speaking nonsense like many of those you find on Youtube!

With some online courses, you’ll even get an official certificate at the end or be given study material that you can download and save! And, best of all, you can adapt your classes to your daily schedule and fit them in when you can no matter where you are in the world!

But beyond that, here are a few of the main benefits of taking an online course:

A. You can deepen your knowledge of a particular area of interest
B. You can explore new job opportunities
C. You can earn certificates at the end of the course that you can add to your resume/CV
D. You can start a new hobby or activity
E. You can simply learn about something because you enjoy it!

Ah, and don’t forget that you can even give online courses as presents to friends, family members, or, if you’re a business owner, even get course packages for employees at your company!

You can learn a bit more about each of these benefits below.

    A. You can deepen your knowledge of a particular area of interest

You can never have too much knowledge, especially when it’s something that can help you professionally. And taking online courses are a great way to help you specialize in certain topics in your area.

For example, if you’re a designer, you can take a course to master more advanced CorelDraw features. If you’re a copywriter, you can take a course on specific types of writing, like email sequences, landing pages, or websites. If you’re in IT, a course that focuses on a programming language, like CSS or JavaScript, might be helpful.

Either way, what’s important to understand here is that taking an online course can pave the way for new (and interesting) career paths.

    B. You can explore new job opportunities

This is perhaps the biggest advantage of doing online courses. Since most courses don’t require previous knowledge or proof to join, you can begin learning about many topics from zero.

This is particularly important when we talk about digital work. Just imagine that you have a blog, like me, that regularly needs programming or design services. Doing a course in design can help you be able to tackle the small layout changes that your blog constantly needs. This is also true for many other areas.

Specifically, I think that learning new skills and taking courses in areas outside your own is super important so you can expand your area of expertise. After all, we never know what tomorrow might hold!

Trying out for an Angular development position? AllFront provides the most common questions and how to answer them for your next interview. That should help boost your chances in landing the position.

    C. You can earn certificates at the end of the course that you can add to your resume/CV

If course, we can’t skip over the certificates that many of these online course websites offer. Whether you’re trying to get into a university, land a specific job opportunity, or simply improve your resume, having “proof” of something you’ve studied can be a big help.

If you’re taking a course just because of a personal interest, then this might not make a difference. You’ll have this knowledge no matter what, with or without a certificate. But when it comes to proving that you have a particular skill set or training in an area, that’s where a certificate comes in.

For example, LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, edX, and others will supply you with certificates upon course completion that you can add to your resume/CV or attach directly to job applications.

And some of these certificates will even say how many university credits you’ve earned or how many “professional education credits” you’ve completed from PMI (Project Management Institute), NASBA (National Association of State Boards of Accountancy), and other relevant institutions!

    D. You can start a new hobby or activity

As of now, we’ve only talked about the benefits online courses can have on your professional life. But they can also be very important in your personal life!

There are many people out there who might work as programmers or in marketing, but are passionate for design or psychology. In this case, there’s a lot of great benefits to doing a course in design or psychology!

Especially in times like now when we have to spend most of our time at home. Having a hobby, distracting ourselves, and doing something we enjoy can make a pretty big impact on our daily moods.

Just imagine that you enjoy photography and take an online course for a hobby. Perhaps you’ll learn so much during this course and fall more in love with photography that you can use this new skill to earn a bit extra on the weekends taking professional photos at weddings or parties!

And remember, if you’re an instructor or professor in any potential “hobby” field, you can also apply for many of the sites I mention below to give online classes yourself to earn a bit of extra cash!

    E. You can learn about something simply because you enjoy it

And even if you don’t turn your hobby into a career or a source of extra income, you can take an online course simply because it’s something you enjoy doing.

For example, if you’re a history fan, there are a ton of extensive, online courses that will explain, in-depth, the historical moments that most interest you. If you love learning about the middle ages or feudal Japan, you can bet there is an online course out there that will teach you everything you ever wanted to know!

Or perhaps you want to learn how to make porcelain tiles to give as handmade birthday gifts? Then you can learn how online!

Best of all, there are literally thousands of free online courses available in just about any topic imaginable if you want to learn for fun and aren’t interested in any kind of certificate or diploma.

What are the best websites to take online courses and online classes?

Below, you’ll find the websites that I consider essential for you to learn new things and develop or refine skills in different areas. With this list, you’ll be able to find the perfect course for you!

And at the end of the list, you’ll also find a comparison table that lets you see how these various websites to do online courses stack up against each other.

1. Best website for online courses in professional development: LinkedIn Learning

If you’re looking for a website to take online courses for professional development, then LinkedIn Learning is certainly one of the better options out there.

Here, you’ll find courses related to business, creativity, technology, Excel, Word, project management, and more.

One nice benefit of LinkedIn Learning is that you can get certificates, which are great to add to your resume, for just about any course you do. Beyond this, given that LinkedIn Learning is a part of LinkedIn, you can include these certificates right on your LinkedIn profile. This way, the certificate gives you even more credibility and makes the courses stand out even more than if they were just on your resume/CV.

And frankly, unlike some of the other websites I’ll mention below, getting the certificates from LinkedIn are quite straightforward. There isn’t any proper coursework you have to do…you just have to pass a few short quizzes, which you can take an unlimited number of times.

Some of the courses you’ll find on LinkedIn Learning include:

  • Online courses in leadership and management
  • Online courses in software development
  • Online courses in business software and tools
  • Online courses in data science
  • Online Excel courses (from basic to advanced levels involving macros)
  • “How to Communicate with Confidence at Work”
  • Online courses to develop problem-solving skills
  • Online Microsoft Word advanced training
  • Online courses in strategic thinking
  • “Fundamentals of Time Management”

You can pay individually for LinkedIn Learning courses, but you can also get a subscription that gives you unlimited access to their 15,000 courses for a monthly ($29.99/month) or annual fee ($19.99/month). There are also quite a few free courses that anyone can take without having a subscription.

Ah, and you can try LinkedIn Learning, take courses, and even earn certificates for a month for free! Try it out – you don’t have to pay a thing!

(During pandemic quarantine, I personally tried the free month and took a LOT of courses and got a lot of great certificates to add to my CV!)

2. Best website for online courses, diplomas & certificates from top universities around the world (option 1): Coursera

Coursera is one of the most well-known and respected companies out there when it comes to online courses. One of my favourite things about Coursera is the wide variety of high-quality university courses they offer. These courses come from some of the most renowned universities in the world – and anyone can take them, no university acceptance nor high tuition fees needed!

For example, you can find vocational courses, courses that specialize in a certain topic, or courses that help you with your personal development. Although they have courses for all levels of learners, the quality of the courses is always high because they are all given by university professors.

Because of this, another major attraction of the Coursera is that you can get certificates from some of the best universities in the world. To give you an idea, some of the universities on Coursera’s roster include Duke University, the Imperial College of London, and Standford.

And it’s not just the courses. On Coursera, you can also complete an entire degree program and get a bachelor’s or a master’s diploma online from well-known universities across the United States, Europe, and the world!

Some of the courses and degree programs you’ll find on Coursera include:

  • Online courses in project management
  • Distance MBA (Master of Business Administration)
  • Online courses in negotiation strategies
  • Online grammar courses
  • Online astronomy courses
  • Online COVID-19 contract tracing courses
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science

Generally, you can take most of the courses from Coursera for free. However, you will need to pay if you want to do the graded assignments or earn a certificate. Most often, these certificates cost $39.

But of course, for bachelor and master programs, you’ll have to pay quite a lot more (although, you’d still pay a lot less than in-person classes in the United States, for example).

3. Best website for online courses, diplomas & certificates from top universities around the world (option 2): edX (coupon 5% discount WH2IVSYOFR3O5X3L)

edX is an education & online learning platform founded by Harvard and MIT. Because it’s a global non-profit, they are trying to give more people access to quality online education for a low (or even free) cost!

Besides the universities already mentioned, edX has online courses from the best universities in the world – including the University of Berkeley, the University of Oxford, and the French Sorbonne University.

The way edX works is quite similar to Coursera. Here, you can find vocational programs that get you professional certificates, individual courses in a wide variety of subjects, and even full bachelor or master degree programs online (of course, at just a fraction of the price of in-person university degrees!). This is because edX offers everything from individual courses to full degree programs!

Some of the courses and degree programs you’ll find on Coursera include:

  • Online MBA (Master of Business Administration)
  • Online social science courses
  • Online law courses
  • Online prep courses for the TOEFL
  • Online prep courses for the IELTS
  • Online IT courses
  • Online bachelor degrees in various areas

The cost of edX courses varies quite a bit. There are some online courses you can do completely for free. However, if you’d like a digital certificate from the school that gives the course, these range from $50 from a “normal” university to $90 from universities like Harvard.

And if you’re thinking of completing a bachelor’s degree or a master’s, edX has MicroBachelor programs with courses that count towards degree programs starting at $166. To complete an entire master’s program online and earn a diploma, prices range from $9,000 to $24,000 for a complete MBA from Boston University.

4. Best website for cheap online courses in any subject from independent course creators: Udemy

I’d have to say that Udemy has to be one of the most “democratic” and varied platforms when it comes to online courses.

And unlike the other platforms I mentioned above (which have courses created by universities and professionals in the field), anyone can make a course on Udemy. Ultimately, you can think of Udemy like an open “marketplace” for courses…or perhaps like the Etsy of online courses!

The benefit of this is that you can literally find a bit of everything, from complete digital marketing courses to specific courses on guitar techniques, languages, creativity, professional skills, and more.

However, since anyone can create and sell their course on Udemy, some courses are definitely better than others. So, make sure you read the reviews of the course you’re looking at before you buy.

The major attraction of Udemy is that their courses are generally very, very cheap, especially when they have their famous promotions where many courses are heavily discounted. To give you an idea, I purchased an entire digital marketing course on Udemy for just $9.99, when the original price was over $100.

Some of the courses you’ll find on Udemy include:

  • Online courses in project planning & management
  • Online courses in graphic design
  • Online courses in Linux
  • Online courses on photographic composition
  • Online financial education courses
  • Online music & instrument courses
  • Online language courses
  • Online Python courses
  • Online AWS courses
  • Online SQL courses
  • Online cybersecurity courses
  • Online blockchain courses
  • Online life coach training courses

One thing to keep in mind is that not all the courses on Udemy offer certificates (or if they do, they aren’t worth as much as the certificates from the platforms above might be). So, if getting certificates is a priority of yours, double-check the course description to see if this is a possibility.

5. Best website for online courses given by A-list celebrity experts & famous specialists: Masterclass

Masterclass’s slogan tells you all you need to know: learn from the best.

Thanks to the number of Hollywood celebrities that have created courses on the platform, Masterclass has grown quite famous.

To give you an idea, here are some of Masterclass’s most popular courses:

  • Martin Scorsese Teaches Filmmaking
  • Natalie Portman Teaches Acting
  • Gordon Ramsey Teaches Cooking
  • Spike Lee Teaches Independent Filmmaking
  • Samuel L. Jackson Teaches Acting

While it may be most known for its courses in the cinema and entertainment industry, Masterclass also offers courses in areas like finances, writing, culinary, and photography. All of which are, of course, taught by “big names” in the field.

Here are some more great examples:

  • Simone Biles Teaches Fundamentals of Gymnastics
  •  Neil deGrasse Tyson Teaches Scientific Thinking and Communication
  • Chris Voss Teaches The Art of Negotiation
  • Paul Krugman Teaches Economics and Society
  • Dr. Jane Goodall Teaches Conservation
  • Margaret Atwood Teaches Creative Writing

The quality of these surprisingly binge-worthy courses are some of the best you’ll find anywhere. Not only will you get instruction from top A-lister professionals, but the production is top-notch and you’ll even get workbooks and assignments to help guide you through each course.

An annual Masterclass membership is $200 for unlimited access to their classes. One thing to know is that you get two logins for this price. In other words, you can divide this cost with a friend if you like.

They also have a 30-day refund guarantee. So if you try Masterclass and decide it’s not for you, you can still cancel in the first 30 days.

One final tip here: keep your eye out for Masterclass promotions. The website regularly offers discounts for first-time users or when they realize you are likely to buy. So, I recommend you practice a bit of patience until you see a discount before finalizing your purchase (such as the “Buy One, Get One” membership promo seen below).

    6. Best website for online courses in art & design: Skillshare

Although Skillshare is focused on the areas of art and design, this doesn’t mean that only specialists in these areas will benefit from their courses since they have content for all levels!

Some of the courses you’ll find on Skillshare include:

  • Online courses in portrait drawing
  • Online animation courses in animation
  • Online photography & illustration courses
  • Online web design courses
  • Online courses in musical composition

The way Skillshare works is similar to Masterclass above. You can see all the course options and their respective “trailers,” but the courses themselves are only available once you purchase a membership. To become a premium user, you’ll pay $8-15 per month depending on the plan you get.

Right now, Skillshare has a promotion where you can get access to a Skillshare Premium plan for 2 months for free.

Enjoy and use the SkillShare discount code: annual30aff or annual40aff.

7. Best website for personalized, 1-on-1 language classes online: Italki

Italki is, without a doubt, the best online platform to learn a language with native speakers that I’ve ever used.

My wife, Nikki, is personally quite obsessed with Italki and uses it for lessons 3-4 times a week as she believes these private conversation lessons to be 100% the most effective way to learn a language.

For starters, you have some impressive variety. With Italki, you can quite literally learn ANY language in a way that’s fun and effective.

How? Through conversations with native speakers of the language you want to learn.

After all, you’ve probably already heard that there’s no better way to learn a language than to live in a place where the language is spoken, right? Well, Italki is the closest thing you can get to this from home as it lets you speak and learn from teachers from anywhere in the world by video.

And given that you’ll be taking 1-on-1 lessons, you can speak with your teacher to completely customize your lessons based on your goals. This means you can choose to focus on conversation, grammar, writing, business language skills, practice for an upcoming trip, a bit of everything, etc.

Note: Verbling is another site like Italki….very good too. So I recommend that you research both, as you can find teachers who only teach on Verbling.

Here’s just a small sampling of the languages you can find native teachers for on the platform:

And keep in mind, these are just a few of the languages that Italki offers. They currently have native speakers available to teach you over 100 different languages such as Korean, Russian, and including a number of endangered ones.

One thing I like about italki is that you pay by lesson. Since the teachers set their own prices, the cost of a 1-hour class can vary anywhere from $5-50 per hour. Plus, you can schedule the languages based on your availability (and that of your teacher, of course).

In other words, no matter what language you want to learn, Italki is an effective and reasonably-priced platform for you to turn to.

8. Best website for complete online courses to learn a new language: Rocket Languages

Rocket Languages offers some of the most comprehensive language courses out there. Unlike Italki, you won’t learn a language with a professor, but with a course and exercises that help you learn to speak, listen, write, and read in your new language.

Rocket Languages currently offers programs in 12 languages including:

Most of Rocket’s language courses offer 3 levels (level 1 – beginner, level 2 – intermediate & level 3 – advanced). Your purchase options are just level 1, just the first two levels, or all three levels at once.

The prices may look steep (as of writing this article, their programs are currently on sale for $99 for level 1, $249 for levels 1 & 2, and $259 for levels 1, 2, &3), but they offer steep discounts (60% off) pretty regularly.

In other words, if you’re patient and keep your eye out from promotions, you’ll never have to pay full price

As an added benefit, you just pay once upfront (unlike the monthly subscription models we’ve seen with most of the websites above) for lifetime access.

You can also go to their website to try a few lessons for free in the language of your choice and see what you think before you buy.

When we first moved to Belgium, Nikki personally used Rocket Language for French (alongside private Italki lessons) and said she enjoyed the course and felt like it gave her a really strong base in French. That said, she still recommends you combine it with another resource like Italki!

9. Best website for free online language courses: Duolingo

Of course, when we’re talking about online language courses, we can’t forget Duolingo. This free, well-known platform deserves its recognition.

Duolingo helps you learn the basics of a language in a way that’s interactive and fun. And best of all, it’s 100% free. All you have to do is make an account and get started. And you can conveniently learn from either your computer or from your phone with the app

Currently, Duolingo has courses for 23 different languages including:

  • Italian
  • German
  • Spanish
  • French
  • Swedish
  • Esperanto
  • Latin
  • High Valyrian
  • And more…

And if you already speak a second language, you can also learn a third language through your second language! For example, instead of taking their French course for English speakers, you can take their French course for Spanish speakers to practice both your language at once!

One thing I want to point out is that Duolingo is not a resource that’s going to get you “fluent” or to an advanced level in any language. That said, it’s a great way to get started, learn some basics, and get yourself in the habit of studying a language consistently. From there, you can combine it with italki, Rocket Languages, other language classes, or any other number of resources to continue making progress.

It’s also good to be aware that the quality of the courses varies between languages.  For example, their Norwegian and German courses are said to be good, but some of the less common languages, like Hungarian and Vietnamese, are said to be very inaccurate.

10. Best website for online courses in IT, tech tools & programming: Udacity (coupon discount: UDACAFFIL2020)

Many people, especially digital nomads, work in IT today since it’s a high-demand industry with jobs that can often be done remotely.

However, while the demand grows, so does your competition. And it’s always important to keep your skills up-to-date, refine your knowledge, and beef up your resume whenever you can.

So if this sounds like you, then Udacity is, without a doubt, your best choice. Here, you’ll find a wide range of courses that focus on “learning by doing” across topics appropriate for those with beginner, intermediate, and advanced knowledge.

One thing to know is that, for some of the courses, you will need to have some prerequisite technical knowledge.

One great thing about Udacity is that it partners with large companies in the industry, such as Intel, Google, and IBM, to give you lessons with some of the biggest names in IT….and who can also offer you some insight into the job market throughout your course.

Some of the courses you’ll find on Udacity include:

  • Online courses in AI
  • Online cloud computing courses
  • Online courses in data science
  • Online programming courses
  • Online courses in autonomous systems
  • Career-focused courses

If you’re interested in Udacity’s more complete “Nanodegree” programs, their monthly subscription comes in at $359 per month. That said, they often offer major promotions that make this price a bit more accessible.

Beyond that, Udacity also offers a number of courses for free so you can get a taste of what it’s like to study on the platform. I strongly recommend you try one of these courses to see if you like it before you make the investment to continue with Udacity.

In response to the pandemic, Udacity is currently offering 1 month free in any of their Nanodegree programs. So if you’re interested, make sure you don’t miss out!

11. Best website for online courses in IT & programming for children: CodeCamp

CodeCamp is another option for professionals in the areas of IT, software, and programming. However, compared to Udacity above, CodeCamp is quite a bit simpler as it is made for individuals just getting their start in this field like children.

CodeCamp has tech courses for different age groups that help school-aged children or teenagers learn about what the field of tech and communication has to offer.

Here’s how CodeCamp courses work: one class per week for eight weeks. 100% online. $160 Australian dollars (as it is an Australian company) or roughly $100 USD.

12. Best website for in-depth, academic courses on a single topic taught by university professors: The Great Courses

The Great Courses give you deep dives into topics across areas like religion, philosophy, music, economics, and mathematics presented by experts and professors from top universities.

Often, these courses are done in partnership with the History Channel, National Geographic, and Ivy League schools.

Some of the courses you’ll find on The Great Courses include:

  • Courses on modern thought
  • “Science Fiction as Philosophy”
  • Courses in comparative economics
  • Courses in sustainable economics
  • Courses in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • Introduction to Design
  • Introduction to Piano
  • Courses on the Old and New Testament
  • Courses in philosophy
  • And even courses about winemaking!

The prices for these courses vary and will also change based on whether you want just the audio, the video, or even the DVD with the complete course.

As far as payment goes, you have the option to pay for individual courses (ranging anywhere from $16 to $500) or to get a membership that gives you unlimited access ($49.95 monthly or $360 annually).

But like Udemy, thankfully this platform also regularly offers major discounts on its courses. For example, the “Great Ideas in Philosophy” course was $529 at the moment when I first wrote this article. However, with the website’s daily deal, you can get it for just $84 today.

These types of discounts are quite common, so I highly recommend you keep an eye out for them. Especially because these courses are really worth their value to anyone interested in these types of topics.

13. Best website for free online courses in school subjects: Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a great organization that wants to democratize learning by offering quality, online courses open to all.

This website is completely focused on your core educational topics, particularly when it comes to mathematics. Its courses are useful for children in their early years at school, as well as students who are about to enter college.

And, best of all, it’s 100% free.

Some of the courses you’ll find on Khan Academy include:

  • Online trigonometry courses
  • Online statistics courses
  • Online algebra courses
  • Online biology courses
  • Online chemistry course
  • Online physics courses

You can sign up as either a teacher or as a student to access the platform and help spread free, high-quality education around the internet.

Truly, I think this is a great initiative to help improve the level of education around the world and give people easier access to information!
