Chattogram (Chittagong) Travel Guide: Chaos, Culture, and the Hospitality You Need to Experience

Traveling to Chattogram Bangladesh

If you are the type of traveler who runs away from luxury resorts and seeks experiences that truly push you out of your comfort zone, Chattogram (also known as Chittagong) in Bangladesh is your next destination. I recently embarked on this adventure, and I must confess: the city is a whirlwind of sensations. It’s noisy, dusty, and chaotic, but it has a massive heart beating through its people.

In this article, I’ll share everything I experienced while exploring the streets of Chattogram—from the nearly impossible mission of buying a train ticket to discovering a “cell phone hospital” and the unexpected passion locals have for Brazil. Get ready for a practical and honest guide on how to survive and fall in love with this Bangladeshi port city.

The Train Mission: How to Get a Ticket to Cox’s Bazar

My journey in Chattogram began with a classic challenge for independent travelers: securing a train ticket. I really wanted to go from Chattogram to Cox’s Bazar to show you guys what the train experience is like.

The problem? Online, there was nothing available for weeks. At the station, the clerk insisted there were only tickets for December 15th (and it was the 5th!). On top of that, there was some initial resistance because I’m a foreigner without a local ID. But with a bit of persistence and patience (the famous “fighting, fighting”), a miracle happened. I got a ticket!

Pro Tip: If you plan to travel by train in Bangladesh, don’t give up at the first “no” at the ticket counter. Go in person, be polite, and be persistent. Be prepared: air-conditioned tickets often sell out fast, so you might end up in a non-AC carriage, which is a much more authentic (and hot!) experience.

The Rhythm of the Streets: Cricket and Urban Chaos

Walking through Chattogram, one thing that really caught my attention was seeing children and young people playing cricket in the streets. It’s exactly like football in Brazil; any empty space becomes a pitch. Since Bangladesh was a British colony, the cricket heritage is incredibly strong.

However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Chattogram is a city with very high levels of noise and air pollution. The sound of honking is constant, and the dust can be harsh for those not used to it.

Health Tip: If you have respiratory sensitivity, I strongly recommend wearing a mask when walking through the central areas. My throat really felt the impact of the pollution on the very first day. Look for parks and green areas to give your lungs a “breather” whenever possible.

Curious Local Commerce and the “Resurrection” of Cell Phones

One of the most fascinating parts of my walk was discovering what I called the “cell phone hospital.” In Chattogram, nothing goes to waste. I saw dozens of small shops specializing in repairing and “resurrecting” old devices. It’s incredible to see the technical skill of these professionals in such a rustic setting.

I also took the opportunity to buy a local leather belt. Bangladesh is famous for high-quality leather products at unbeatable prices.

Where to Buy: If you’re looking for genuine leather belts, wallets, or bags, the street shops in Chattogram are the place to go. Don’t forget to haggle—it’s part of the culture and you’ll get excellent prices.

The (Frustrated) Attempt to Visit the Ship Breaking Yard

Chattogram is world-famous for its Ship Breaking Yard, where massive ships are dismantled. I tried to get as close as possible, but security is tight. The yards are walled off with high fences. I managed to reach a nearby fishing village and hear the deafening sound of metal being cut, but direct access is restricted.

Still, the view of the coast with the giant ships stranded waiting to be scrapped is impressive. It’s a visual reminder of the massive industrial role this city plays on the global stage.

Transport in Bangladesh: 15 Ways to Get Around

Forget Uber as you know it. In Chattogram, I counted at least 15 different types of transportation. From bicycle rickshaws, electric tuk-tuks, and colorful crowded buses, to motorcycles.

Public transport is incredibly cheap. I took a bus that cost about 8 cents (USD) for a 25-minute trip! It’s an organized chaos that works in a way that only those who are there can understand.

Transport Tip: For short distances, use electric rickshaws. For a more “hardcore” and cheap experience, buses are unbeatable, but prepare for the heat and the crowds. During rush hour, traffic is paralyzing; plan your trips with plenty of extra time.

A Passion for a Distant Brazil

The biggest surprise of the trip was the emotional connection. Upon discovering I was Brazilian, the locals immediately broke into huge smiles. They showed me videos of thousands of people in Dhaka celebrating Brazil’s goals in the last World Cup. It’s moving to see how our football creates bridges in places so remote and different from our own reality.

Practical Tips for Your Trip to Chattogram

  1. Language: The official alphabet is Bengali. In places like the train station, it’s rare to find signs in English. Don’t be shy about asking for help; people are extremely helpful toward foreigners.
  2. Cultural Respect: When visiting mosques, dress modestly. Note that many places close during prayer times or start the day later.
  3. Recording Tech: If you’re a content creator, use discreet equipment. I used a 360 camera because it’s small and less intimidating in crowded streets.
  4. Money: Always carry small Taka bills (the local currency) to pay for transport. Many drivers won’t have change for large bills.

Conclusion: Is Chattogram worth visiting?

Chattogram is not a city for “window-shopping tourists.” It’s a destination for those who want to feel the pulse of real life, with all its imperfections and hidden beauties. The hospitality of the Bengali people makes up for any dust or honking. If you’re looking for an authentic journey, Chattogram will leave a mark on you forever.
