Traveling through Pakistan is full of surprises. After testing the local trains, I decided to hit the road to go from Lahore to Peshawar. The big question I had was: what is the best way to make this 6-hour journey with comfort and safety?
The short answer is: Daewoo Express. In this post, I’ll share my experience on the country’s most famous bus, how much it costs, and what you can expect from this “VIP service.” Watch my full video about Daewoo Express in Pakistan:
What is Daewoo Express in Pakistan?
If you are planning a trip to Pakistan, you will hear this name everywhere. Daewoo is a South Korean conglomerate, but in Pakistan, the brand has become synonymous with reliability and luxury. Unlike those super-colorful (and often falling-apart) buses we see in photos, Daewoo buses are modern, clean, and stick to strict schedules.
The Bus Station in Lahore
The experience starts right at the station. Forget the chaos of typical bus terminals; the Daewoo Express station in Lahore is organized, clean, and has everything you need: food, water, and comfortable waiting areas.
Security Tip: Don’t be alarmed if you are asked not to film inside the station. Due to national security concerns and the region’s history of conflict, they are very strict about cameras in strategic points. Be discreet!
What’s the VIP Bus Like Inside?
As soon as I boarded, the first thing I noticed was the space. The seats are excellent and recline quite a bit—though, out of courtesy, I recommend not reclining fully during the day so you don’t squash the person behind you.
Comfort and Amenities:
- Air Conditioning: Works very well (a survival essential in the Pakistani heat).
- Connectivity: While some newer buses have Wi-Fi and USB ports, older models might not have outlets. Make sure your power banks are charged!
- Workspace: If you are a digital nomad, the bus is stable enough to use a laptop, but be prepared to use your phone’s hotspot if the Wi-Fi signal fluctuates.
The “Snack Box” Unboxing
One of the coolest parts of the trip is the onboard service. Yes, you get a box of treats included in your ticket price! On my journey, the surprise was quite pleasant. I received a kit with potato chips, lemon-filled cookies, orange waffles, and even a piece of candy.
Additionally, attendants pass by offering water in disposable cups throughout the trip. It’s a classic “airline-style” touch that we rarely see on land travel anymore.
Safety and Strategic Stops
A curiosity that might intimidate first-time travelers: before departure and at some stops, a security officer enters the bus and films everyone’s face.
This is a standard security protocol in Pakistan to ensure authorities know exactly who is on board. To me, this provides more peace of mind than concern, as it deters anyone with bad intentions.
Restroom and Food Breaks
After nearly 3 hours on the road, we made a 10-minute stop at a modern convenience station.
- Watch the Clock: 10 minutes is the official time. Although Pakistan has a more relaxed pace, I don’t recommend being late—you don’t want to be the tourist keeping the whole bus waiting.
Price: How Much Does Luxury Cost in Pakistan?
The approximately 6-hour journey from Lahore to Peshawar cost about $12 USD. For local standards, it’s a bit more expensive than the common bus (which can be quite precarious), but for international travelers, the value for money is unbeatable given the safety and comfort provided.
Verdict: Daewoo Express or Train?
If you are looking for productivity and want to avoid the unpredictable swaying of the tracks, Daewoo Express is the better option. It’s faster, the terminals are more organized, and the onboard service makes the trip fly by. It’s the definitive way to cross Northern Pakistan with dignity.
