I have always been curious about the less obvious routes that connect Brazil to its South American neighbors. Recently, I embarked on a journey that many people don’t even know exists: the GOL international flight between Paramaribo (Suriname) and Belém (Pará). If you are planning an adventure through the Guianas or just want to know if it’s worth flying with the “orange airline” outside of Brazil, this full review is for you.
Get ready to discover the in-flight service, aircraft comfort, and what to expect on this short two-hour flight that links the Brazilian Amazon to the heart of Suriname.

Paramaribo Airport: Departure Checklist
My journey began at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport in Paramaribo. The airport is functional but has its quirks. I arrived about two hours before the flight, and the check-in process was surprisingly smooth, without the kilometer-long lines sometimes found in major Brazilian hubs.
Golden Tip: Pay attention to the bureaucracy. To leave (and enter) Suriname, you need to fill out digital forms and pay an entry fee. Upon departure, immigration asks detailed questions, including your address in Brazil. Have everything ready to avoid stress.
One negative point I noticed was the lack of water fountains in the boarding area. If you are like me and enjoy filling your own bottle to avoid plastic waste and save money, be aware that in Paramaribo, you will likely have to buy bottled water.
The Boarding Experience and the Aircraft
Boarding for the GOL flight was done directly on the tarmac. It is an interesting experience as it allows you to see other aircraft up close, such as the imposing KLM planes that connect Suriname to Amsterdam (a reflection of the country’s Dutch colonial past).
Upon entering the GOL Boeing 737, the feeling is one of familiarity. The aircraft used on this international route follows the same pattern as Brazilian domestic flights.
- Comfort: The seats are leather, and while the aircraft appeared well-maintained, legroom is standard economy—a bit tight for very tall people, but manageable for a short flight.
- Entertainment: Do not expect individual screens or physical in-flight magazines. Entertainment is provided via Wi-Fi (GOL Online), where you can access movies, series, and even live TV through your own device (phone or laptop). There are paid internet packages, but the basic entertainment content is free.
- Power: Depending on the age of the aircraft scheduled for the day, you might find USB ports. On my subsequent connecting flight, the plane was newer and had this facility, but on the Paramaribo-Belém leg, it comes down to luck.
In-Flight Service: What is Served on an International Flight?
Many travelers wonder if GOL offers anything different on its international flights. The short answer is: it is an efficient service for a low-cost carrier.
About 20 minutes after takeoff, the crew began the service. I received a bag of sweet potato chips (only 10g, a very symbolic portion!), a cracker, and a chocolate “Tortuguita,” along with beverage options like soda, juice, and water.
For a flight of only two hours, it is enough to “stave off hunger.” The positive highlight goes to the friendliness of the flight attendants, who are all Brazilian, which makes communication much easier and brings that feeling of being back home even before landing.
Landing in Belém and Preparations for COP30
We arrived in Belém ten minutes ahead of schedule, which is always a plus for any airline. The Belém International Airport (Val-de-Cans) is already buzzing with preparations for COP30 (the United Nations Climate Change Conference).
The infrastructure is being renovated, and signage regarding sustainability and climate policies is everywhere. Immigration was fast and efficient, ending this international crossing on a high note.
Practical Tips for Your Trip
If you are thinking about taking this route, here are some tips that could save your trip:
- Online Check-in: Always check in via the GOL app to speed up your life at the airport.
- Bring Your Own Entertainment: Since there are no screens, make sure your phone is charged and that you have the GOL app or an updated browser to access GOL Online. Carrying a power bank is essential since not every plane has a functional USB port.
- Save on Airfare: Flights to Suriname can vary greatly in price. Research in advance and use comparison sites. Sometimes, booking with Smiles miles can be an excellent deal.
- Language: If you don’t speak English or Dutch, don’t worry too much. The GOL team and even some check-in staff in Paramaribo speak Portuguese.
Is it Worth Flying GOL to Suriname?
Yes, it is worth it if your goal is a practical and fast trip from point A to point B. GOL is a low-cost airline with an excellent reputation for safety and maintenance. You won’t have the luxury of a first-class cabin, but you will have cordial service, punctuality, and the convenience of a direct flight that avoids time-consuming connections in other hubs.
The Paramaribo-Belém flight is a vital bridge for those working in the Guianas region or for Brazilians living in Suriname. It is a short, efficient route that delivers what it promises.
